Objectives of the PASL
As prescribed in the constitution, there are four main objectives of the Population Association of Sri Lanka:
The promotion of research in Demography and Population Studies with special reference to Sri Lanka.
The development of closer contacts among persons engaged in teaching, research and policy planning, and implementation in the field of Demography and Population Studies.
The dissemination of knowledge of Demography and Population Studies and actively promoting an interest in the subject at institutions of higher learning and other organizations working in the relevant field and
- Promoting awareness of population and development issues in the community at large, with a view to influencing public policy.

FELICITATION-RECIPIENTS OF GOLD MEDALS
Dr. A.T.P.L. Abeykoon has been an eminent researcher, lecturer, policy planner and an administrator for over forty years. He was the President of the Population Association of Sri Lanka during 1999-2002. His first exposure to population studies was in the early 1970s at the International Institute for Population Studies in Bombay, India. Subsequently, he obtained his Masters Degree in Population Studies from Cornell University U.S.A. Dr. Abeykoon earned his Ph.D. in Population Planning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. During his distinguished career as a public servant for nearly four decades, he represented the Government of Sri Lanka in many international conferences on population issues including the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo in 1994.
Emeritus Professor K.A.P. Siddhisena, has been a researcher, lecturer, and an administrator, for a period of over 40 years. He started his distinguished university career in 1976, as an Assistant Lecturer in the Demographic Training and Research Unit (DTRU) of the University of Colombo. Since then he has held a number of important positions, reaching the highest level in the academic field as Emeritus Professor of Demography. He played a vital role in establishing the Department of Demography of the University of Colombo and was the first Head of the Department of Demography. He holds a B.A. (Hons.) and B.Phil. (Hons.) in Economics from the University of Colombo, Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Statistics from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, M.A. in Demography from the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Population Planning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. Prof. Siddhisena was the founder Secretary of the PASL and has also served as its President.
In memoriam of Dr. Kanthi Ratnayake
It is with great sadness that we inform the demise of Dr. Kanthi Ratnayake, member of the founding Council of the Population Association of Sri Lanka (PASL), and first Editor of the Sri Lanka Journal of Population Studies. Dr. Ratnayake also served as President of the PASL (2002-2004) and was a Senior Professor at the Department of Geography, University of Ruhuna. Her valuable service to the PASL will always be remembered with gratitude. The upcoming volume of the Sri Lanka Journal of Population Studies (Volume 20 Number 2) will be dedicated to her with all due respect. The Council of PASL observed one-minute silence at the 205thCouncil Meeting to pay respect to the late Professor.
